West Hempstead Middle School is adding on 1,800 square feet to the school’s gymnasium, offering more space for bleachers and to accommodate more fans. This project started in September of 2021 and should be finished February 2022. West Hempstead chose to forgo a full rip up and replacement of the gym floor and instead Milburn Flooring is working on an adaptive gym, weaving new maple wood flooring in with the existing maple floor and then sanding to blend.
RENU built a new frame, completed masonry work leaving rough openings temporarily covered while installing the EPDM roofing. A makeshift wall was elevated between the gym and outside. To protect materials from the elements the existing floors were covered with multiple weatherized layers and withstood the conditions of two major weather events. All overhead work including electrical, plumbing, roof drains and HVAC will be connected and duct work connected to all RTUs. Once the space is conditioned the flooring can then be installed followed by the new bleachers and curtain wall divider.
