PARTNERING WITH LONG ISLAND LIBRARIES
As Libraries have opened around the country, two local libraries on Long Island remain closed but for a better reason than you might assume. RENU is heading up a complete renovation at East Meadow Library and Bayport-Bluepoint Library is moving!
The new home for the Bayport-Bluepoint Library has been under construction since June 2020 is replacing the St. Ursula Center. A complete renovation of the approximately 30,000 square feet
building will be reconstructed into a new public library. Although the St. Ursula Center is not a historic facility, the Convent’s quaint character generated only minor exterior modifications including a new entry vestibule with accessible automated doors and a relief space for the main lobby. The small portico renovation was designed with a seating area, book drop, new steps, an ADA-accessible ramp, and planters. RENU will preserve the stained glass and year sign from the original structure. Those items will be saved and on display for historic uses. The cemetery will remain untouched and will not be restored.
East Meadow Library is growing! The entire renovation consists of approximately 40,000 square feet of existing space and about 5,300 square feet of new construction and additions, including a community room and lobby vestibule area. Library operations have been closed since July 2019 and due to the hard work of RENU’s staff members, this job has faced limited setbacks from the virus allowing this building’s scheduled completion to be February 2021.
Visitors will experience a whole new interior design with ceramic and porcelain flooring, wall tiling, carpet tile, and resilient floor finishes all installed by Milburn Flooring. Natural lighting will fill the space with beautiful skylights. Acoustical ceilings, trim, and finishing will be visually appealing while the inner workings like plumbing, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and lighting will be new. The new construction includes a 250-tiered-seating lecture hall added to the east side of the building. The exterior finishes to the addition showcase brick veneer, precast, California Stucco, and new windows while the existing building consists of new storefront systems, windows, and automatic doors. The exterior redevelopment includes a new parking lot, concrete sidewalks, concrete curbs, finish landscaping, an outdoor reading garden, an entry plaza, and more.
RENU looks forward to giving their neighborhoods and children something to see as the spring season approaches. These renovations are sure to bring rejuvenation into communities at a time when it is greatly needed.
